The Moorings Yacht & Country Club hosted the Mardy Fish Children’s Foundation Tennis Championships “Wild Card” doubles tournament for the first time April 2-3 and was an overhead smash winner. The club and its members enthusiastically supported aspiring competitive players seeking the opportunity to get a chance to play in a pro doubles tournament and earn ATP ranking points and prize money.

Aidan Borosko of Montclair, N.J.. and partner Jovan Lubbe of South Africa, who both train at the prestigious Saddlebrook Academy in Wesley Chapel, Florida, won the tournament in a thrilling final defeating Abhishek Thorat of Parrish, Florida and Patrick Daciek of Wesley Chapel, Fla., 6-4, 4-6 (10-5) in the final. Borosko and Lubbe will have an opportunity to earn an ATP ranking point at the Mardy Fish Children’s Foundation Tennis Championships USTA Pro Circuit event that will be played April 21-27 at the Vero Beach Tennis & Fitness Club at Timber Ridge. Borosko and Lubbe will play their first round doubles match on Tuesday, April 22.

Borosko has competed on the USTA national junior circuit, including at the USTA Boys’ 18 National Championships at Kalamazoo Michigan and will play college tennis in the fall at Denison College. Lubbe, who has been a runner-up at ITF World Junior Tennis Tour events in Kingston, Jamaica, Boca Raton, Fla., and Windoek, Namibia, will play for Cal-Poly in the fall. Thorat, who finished in third place at the Mardy Fish singles wild card event at Sea Oaks in February, will play for Columbia University in the fall. Daciek, a former standout at Virginia Tech and now mainly a coach, has played on the ITF World Tennis Tour circuit for five years previously and has played against such players as Alexander Zverev, Felix-Auger Aliassime, Frances Tiafoe, Reilly Opelka and Milos Raonic in the career.

Local Vero Beach residents who competed in the event include Ching Wang, James Van Deinse and Christian Docter as well as Moorings teaching pro Tyler Rios and Aldo Burga, who played in front of a loud crowd of members in a 6-0, 6-1 loss to the eventual winners in the first round. Wang and partner Jose Moreno of Tampa, Florida lost in the semifinals to Thorat and Daciek 6-2, 6-1 while van Deinse and Docter lost to Rushikesh Sonawane and Noah Tauma 6-4, 6-2.
