On Court 1 at the Vero Beach Tennis & Fitness Club in April, Alex Razeghi and Nikita Filin faced each other in the first round of the $15,000 Mardy Fish Children’s Foundation Tennis Championships first round.
Later this month, the two will pair side-by-side on the doubles court in the main draw of men’s doubles at the U.S. Open in New York.
Razeghi and Filin earned their U.S. Open invitation by winning the doubles title at the USTA National Boy’s 18s championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The pair defeated Kaylan Bigun, who also played in Vero Beach in April and the two years before that, and Trevor Svajda in the final.
Razeghi beat Filin 6-4, 6-4 in the Mardy Fish first round before losing to eventual champion Garrett Johns in the second round. He paired with Cooper Woestendick, however, to win the Mardy Fish doubles title, the first pro doubles title for both players and, ironically, they beat Filin and his partner Mikael Anderson, in the first round of doubles too, by a 6-4, 6-2 scoreline. Filin had advanced into the main draw of the singles competition via the qualifying rounds.
Razeghi followed up on his doubles success in Vero Beach by also winning the doubles title at the Wimbledon junior championships, pairing with Max Schoenhaus of Germany.
Razeghi, from Humble, Texas, will play college tennis at Stanford University this coming season. Filin, from Glenview, Illinois, will play for Ohio State.
The singles title at Kalamazoo was won by Matthew Forbes of Raleigh, N.C., who defeated Jack Kennedy of Long Island in the final – both players having yet to play in Vero Beach. Woestendick lost in the semifinals of singles losing to Forbes while Kaylan Bigin, who won the French Open junior boys singles title, lost in the round of 16. Filin reached the quarterfinals of singles, also losing to Forbes.
The 2025 Mardy Fish Children’s Foundation Tennis Championships will be held April 21-27, 2025 at the Vero Beach Tennis & Fitness Club at Timber Ridge.
